N. Korea's Leader Supervises Hypersonic Missile Test

(MENAFN) North Korea's supreme leader Kim Jong-un directly supervised a hypersonic weapons trial on Sunday that assessed combat preparedness of the nation's nuclear arsenal—a demonstration that emerged within hours of Pyongyang's fierce criticism of American military operations in Venezuela.

The early Sunday exercise featured a hypersonic projectile fired from the Ryokpho District in Pyongyang, which covered 1,000 kilometers before striking its designated mark in the Sea of Japan, a Korean news agency reported. Official state channels characterized the launch as a strategic capability assessment.

Though Pyongyang avoided drawing direct connections between the weapons test and the Venezuela situation, the regime's official communications positioned both incidents in immediate succession. Concurrent with the missile activity, the Foreign Ministry issued scathing remarks against America's involvement in Venezuela, labeling it "the most serious form of encroachment on sovereignty" and evidence of Washington's "rogue and brutal nature."

During his supervision of the operation, Kim Jong-un described the drill as a "very important strategic task" essential for preserving and strengthening a "powerful and reliable nuclear deterrent."

"Our activity is clearly aimed at gradually putting the nuclear war deterrent on a high-developed basis. Why it is necessary is exemplified by the recent geopolitical crisis and complicated international events," he stated, according to media.

Kim Jong-un commended the missile unit for "playing the prelude of the first combat drill in the new year" and delivered New Year's salutations to the nation's strategic forces, describing them as a "reliable shield for defending sovereignty and security."

North Korea has consistently maintained that its armament initiatives serve defensive purposes. Recent efforts have concentrated on advancing increasingly advanced hypersonic weapon systems. Pyongyang has condemned collaborative military drills between the US, South Korea, and Japan, characterizing these operations as efforts to establish an "Asian version of NATO" that destabilizes regional stability.
