North Korea Conducts First Missile Test of 2026
The JCS reported that the missiles traveled approximately 900 kilometers (around 539 miles) before landing in the waters, though further specifics about the missile types were not immediately disclosed.
In response, South Korea’s Office of National Security at the presidential compound convened an urgent meeting, chaired by Deputy National Security Adviser Lim Jong-deuk, with participation from Defense Ministry officials and the JCS.
"North Korea's launch of ballistic missiles constitutes a provocative act in violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, and we urge the North to cease such actions," the National Security Office declared in a statement.
This incident marked Pyongyang’s first missile test since November 7, 2025, when a similar weapon was fired into the same sea.
“Our military is maintaining a readiness posture while closely monitoring the situation,” the JCS added in a brief note, as reported by a news agency.
South Korea’s armed forces confirmed they are working alongside US military units to evaluate the launch and its potential consequences for regional stability.
The US Indo-Pacific Command responded cautiously, acknowledging the event but stating it "does not pose an immediate threat to U.S. personnel or territory, or to our allies."
